National Child Development Associate (CDA)
What is the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential?
The CDA is a national credential awarded to an individual that has
demonstrated his/her competence to meet the needs of children and to
work with parents and other adults to nurture children’s physical,
social, emotional, and intellectual growth in a child development
framework.
Why should I earn a CDA Credential?
This national credential is recognized as an important building block
to improve the quality of child care. The CDA Credential provides a
knowledge and skill base that enables an individual to meet the social,
emotional, cognitive, and physical development needs of children. BBC
supports caregivers in their efforts to earn the CDA Credential through
community based training and various scholarships and funding
initiatives.
Where do I get more information about the CDA Credential?
The CDA National Credentialing Program is administered by the Council for Professional Recognition. Visit their website at www.cdacouncil.org or call them at 1-800-424-4310 to learn more about the program and how to earn the CDA Credential.
How can I earn the CDA Credential?
Anyone interested in applying for the CDA Credential should contact the
Council for Professional Recognition (1-800-424-4310). A candidate is
required to complete 120 clock hours of formal child care education and
complete a CDA assessment process to be awarded the CDA Credential. The
candidate must demonstrate competence in his/her ability to meet the
CDA Competency Goals through his/her work in a center-based or family
child care program. The candidate presents evidence of his/her
competence through:
- A professional resource file
- Parent questionnaires
- Classroom observation conducted by a CDA advisor
- An oral and written test administered by a Council Representative
BBC’s CDA Training Options:
INDIVIDUAL MODULES
Allow candidates to develop their own training plans, select and take
appropriate training over time, and complete all the documentation that
must be submitted for the Council. This allows candidates to pay and
work at a pace that suits their own schedule and ability to commit time
to this process. However, it may be more difficult to ensure that you
take the right set of training that will best prepare you to meet the
CDA Competency Goals and to take the oral and written exam. This avenue
for completing the CDA is best suited for an individual that is highly
motivated and a self-directed learner.
PACKAGED COURSES
BBC also offers various training packages for completing the CDA
Credential. The amount of time it will take a CDA candidate to complete
the Credential may vary from one program to another, depending on the
training schedule and whether the program offers assistance in
completing the documentation required by the Council.
CDA Program Packaged Opportunities include:
- 80 Hour CDA Course – A complete course package
that will meet the CDA training content areas. This is a 25 week
training course consisting of 80 hours of classroom and field training
that includes additional assistance from a mentor/advisor that helps
the CDA candidate complete the required documentation and prepare to
meet the CDA Competency Goals and to take the oral and written exam.
Applicants must have completed the state mandated 40 hours training to
qualify.
- Bilingual & Onsite Courses – BBC offers CDA
program designed to meet the individual needs of early educators. We
offer bilingual and onsite training at a child care center with a
commitment of 10 or more teachers. Training offered onsite at a child
care center will be individually designed to meet the needs of the
program.
- Accelerated CDA Course - Accelerated classes meet
weekly for ten weeks. Courses are offered quarterly at various
locations. Applicants must have completed the state mandated 40 hours
training and have advanced reading and writing skills to qualify. This
avenue for completing the CDA certificate is best suited for an
individual that is highly motivated and able to work at a fast pace.
